Presentation
The Local Accommodation for Birds is a project to promote bird life in urban and peri-urban areas through the installation of nest boxes. It originated as a winning initiative of the Portuguese Participatory Budget 2018, which survived the funding period and now aims to ensure the maintenance and monitoring of the installed boxes, and has expanded its area of intervention through partnerships with different entities.
Objectives
Promote biodiversity in urban and peri-urban contexts.
Promote and highlight the role of birds in biological pest control.
To foster interest and provide a more direct contact between society and avifauna.
To promote environmental education through the dissemination of fundamental concepts of ecology (species, prey, predator, food chain, biological pest, etc.).
To promote development education using the assistance provided by migratory species as an example of the need for a concerted effort to solve the planet’s environmental problems.
Intended Audience
The general public, managers of public spaces, namely municipalities and parish councils, managers of green spaces (Hotels and Golf), agricultural and forestry producers and the school community.
Actions
Installation of nest boxes for different groups of urban birds, such as passerines and medium-sized birds of prey.
Maintenance and monitoring of nest boxes.
Live broadcasting of images taken inside nest boxes.
Carrying out environmental awareness actions.
Communication of results.
