Nocturnal Butterfly Station

Nocturnal Butterfly Station

Presentation

The Quinta de Marim Nocturnal Butterfly Station is part of the Network of Nocturnal Butterfly Stations, a conservation and dissemination project on nocturnal butterflies in Portugal. This nationwide project consists of the establishment of a network of several sampling sites dispersed throughout the country where, in a coordinated manner, these insects are sampled using a standardised method based on light traps.

The station run by Vita Nativa is located in the Ria Formosa Natural Park and is surrounded by an enormous diversity of habitats, including agricultural, marsh, cork oak and stone pine forest areas.

Objectives

To assess population trends and the status of the populations of the most abundant species of nocturnal butterflies in Portugal;

To bring together enthusiasts and disseminate the importance that nocturnal butterflies have for ecosystems in the context of climate change and widespread loss of biodiversity, raising awareness of their conservation and that of their habitats.
